How to wash a grounding sheet without ruining it

The most common worry we hear before someone buys is that a grounding sheet must be delicate. It isn't. It's a cotton sheet and it goes in the machine.

But three ordinary laundry habits will quietly stop it working, and you won't notice when they do — which is the actual reason to read this.

The three things to keep away from it

Fabric softener. It works by depositing a thin lubricating film on fibres. That film sits between your skin and the conductive thread, and it doesn't rinse out easily.

Dryer sheets. Same mechanism, same result.

Oils. The one people miss. Not just cooking oil — body lotion and massage oil applied before bed, and detergents with added lavender, coconut or eucalyptus. Anything oil-based coats the fibre.

None of these damage the cotton. They interfere with conductivity, which is the one thing the sheet does that an ordinary sheet doesn't.

The whole routine

  • Machine wash warm, around 40°C
  • Mild detergent — anything without softeners, bleach or added oils
  • Tumble low or line dry
  • Every one to two weeks. Weekly if you sweat at night or live somewhere humid.

That's it. In every other respect it's an ordinary cotton sheet.

You don't need a special detergent

Some brands sell one. You don't need it, and you almost certainly already own something suitable.

Look at what you have. If the ingredients don't include softening agents or added oils, it's fine. Most plain, unscented detergents qualify.

We'd rather tell you that than sell you a bottle.

Wash it in the sheet-care bag

Put the sheet in the sheet-care bag before it goes in the machine, and unplug the cord first. The bag helps protect the silver fibre from snagging.

If you think residue has built up, a wash with plain detergent and no softener often clears it. If something still seems wrong, email us.

If you're unsure about your outlet

Older homes sometimes have three-prong sockets that look grounded and aren't — the earth pin is there but nothing is connected behind it. Plug the cord into an outlet with a working ground. If you're unsure about an outlet, try another one, or ask a licensed electrician to check and correct its ground.

How long should it last?

We won't give you a number we can't stand behind.

Silver fibre degrades with abrasion and residue rather than with time, so it depends far more on how you wash it than on how long you've owned it. A sheet washed weekly with softener will fade faster than one washed weekly without.

This is a less satisfying answer than "five years", and it's the true one.

What to do about lotions

If you use body lotion or oil at night, apply it well before bed and let it absorb properly, or apply it in the morning instead.

We mention this last because it's the recommendation people find most annoying, and because it's genuinely a trade-off. If nightly lotion matters more to you than the sheet's lifespan, that's a reasonable choice — just wash a bit more often.
