What to expect in your first 90 nights

Grounding is not a belief system. It is a measurable electrical effect that has been studied since the early 2000s, and you can watch it happen on a voltmeter in your own bedroom. Here is what happens when you start, what the research has actually measured, and how to get the most out of your first ninety nights.

What happens the moment you connect

Indoors, your body sits inside the 50/60 Hz electric field thrown off by the wiring in your walls, your lamp cords, the charger on your nightstand. You act as one plate of a capacitor, and you float at somewhere between a few hundred millivolts and a few volts relative to the earth outside.

Plug the sheet in and that collapses to millivolts. Brown (2016), measuring 50 people, found an average 58-fold reduction in AC body voltage the instant participants were grounded. Independent electrical engineers at the University of New Hampshire built their own instrumentation and confirmed the charge exchange is real.

This is ordinary, uncontested electrical engineering — the same principle behind static control in electronics manufacturing. It is not a claim we are asking you to take on faith. It is the reason a conductivity tester ships in every box: you can prove it on night one, and again any night after that.

What researchers have measured

The strongest study in the field is the one you would want it to be. In 2019 a team at the University of Salzburg ran a triple-blinded, randomised, sham-controlled trial — participants, testers and data analysts all blind — with no commercial ties to any grounding company. Twenty-two people trained their legs to exhaustion, then slept grounded or sham-grounded for ten days.

  • Muscle damage was less than half. Creatine kinase rose 310% in the grounded group against 760% in sham (P = 0.007).
  • Power came back faster. Jump height dropped 8.2% versus 14.3% (P = 0.017).
  • Not one grounded participant had a large spike in muscle damage. Forty percent of the sham group did.
  • Inflammation markers fell — soluble P-selectin down about 20% (P = 0.003).

On sleep, Park and colleagues (2025) ran a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 60 participants over 31 days and reported significant improvements in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Insomnia Severity Index, and actigraphy-measured total sleep time — with insomnia severity still improved at follow-up.

And the largest physiology dataset, from a military hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland, put 84 people through randomised double-blind testing and found consistent, repeatable shifts in serum iron, ionised calcium, phosphorus and thyroid hormones.

These are real measurements, on real people, in peer-reviewed journals, using blood markers and instruments rather than questionnaires. That is a stronger evidence base than most things sold in the wellness aisle.

Your first ninety nights

Night one — prove it works. Set the sheet up, plug the cord into the ground port of your outlet, and touch the tester to the fabric. It confirms the conductive path in about thirty seconds. Do this before you sleep on it, so you know your baseline is good.

Week one — let your body settle. Most people notice something in the first week; some notice nothing for two or three. Both are normal. Sleep changes are usually the first thing people report — falling asleep a little faster, waking less in the night.

Weeks two to four — look for the pattern, not the night. Any single night is noise. What matters is the trend across a fortnight. It helps to jot one line each morning: how long it took to fall asleep, how many times you woke, how you felt getting up.

Weeks five to twelve — this is where the trial earns its length. The recovery findings in the research came from ten consecutive nights of grounded sleep; the sleep findings from thirty-one. Ninety nights gives you far more than either study allowed, which is exactly why we set the trial that long.

Getting the most out of it

  • Skin contact matters. The conductive threads need to touch you. Bare feet, arms and shoulders on the sheet do more than pyjamas and socks.

Grounding research is young, and it is a young field precisely because nobody could patent it. Sample sizes are modest and independent replication is still building. We would rather tell you that than pretend the literature is bigger than it is — and we publish a full account of the evidence, strong studies and weak ones alike, so you can weigh it yourself.
