What grounding research actually shows

Every grounding company points at the same research. Almost none of them tell you which studies are strong, which are weak, and who paid for them. This page does — because the strongest evidence for grounding holds up fine without exaggeration, and you deserve to see where the line is.

The best study in the field is a good one

In 2019, a research group at the University of Salzburg published the most rigorous grounding trial ever run. It was triple-blinded — the participants, the testers, and the data analysts all didn't know who was grounded — randomised, and sham-controlled, meaning the control group slept on identical equipment that simply wasn't connected. The authors declared no commercial relationship with any grounding company.

Twenty-two people ran downhill until their legs were wrecked, then slept either grounded or sham-grounded for ten days. The results:

  • Muscle damage was less than half. Creatine kinase — the standard blood marker for muscle breakdown — rose 310% in the grounded group versus 760% in the sham group (P = 0.007).
  • They recovered their power faster. Jump height fell 8.2% in the grounded group versus 14.3% in sham (P = 0.017).
  • Nobody in the grounded group had a large spike in muscle damage. In the sham group, 40% did.
  • Inflammation markers dropped. Soluble P-selectin fell about 20% (P = 0.003), with reductions in IP-10 and MIP-1α.

Twenty-two people is a small trial and the confidence intervals are wide. But this is a properly blinded, properly controlled, independently funded study that found a real effect on an objective blood marker — not a questionnaire. That is a meaningfully better piece of evidence than most wellness products have for anything.

What grounding provably does — and you can check it yourself

Set the health question aside for a moment, because there is a part of this that isn't in dispute at all.

Right now, indoors, your body is sitting inside the 50/60 Hz electric field radiating from the wiring in your walls, your lamp cords, the charger on your nightstand. Your body behaves like one plate of a capacitor with respect to that wiring, and another with respect to the earth. You float at somewhere between a few hundred millivolts and a few volts relative to ground.

Connect to earth and that collapses to millivolts. This is ordinary electrical engineering — the same principle behind static control in electronics manufacturing.

  • Brown (2016), n = 50, measured AC body voltage reduced by an average of 58-fold when participants were grounded, with currents "several orders of magnitude lower than the accepted minimum level of perception." PubMed 27454187
  • Chamberlin and colleagues (2014) — five electrical engineers at the University of New Hampshire with no industry connection — built custom instrumentation and independently confirmed measurable charge exchange between a grounded person and the earth. PubMed 25435837

This is the part we sell on, because it is the part we can prove on your bed, on your first night. Every kit ships with a conductivity tester, and the tester is yours to keep. Touch it to the sheet and you will see for yourself whether the conductive path is intact.

That matters more than it sounds. Silver-threaded fabric degrades — body oils, detergent, fabric softener, time. A grounding sheet with a broken conductive path looks and feels exactly like a working one. If you own a grounding sheet from anyone else and you have never tested it, you do not actually know whether it is doing anything at all. What the sleep research shows

The largest sleep trial is Park and colleagues (2025) — randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, n = 60, using a sham mat as the control. Over 31 days it reported significant improvements in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Insomnia Severity Index, and actigraphy-measured total sleep time, with insomnia severity still improved at follow-up.

The largest physiology dataset comes from Sokal & Sokal (2011) at a military hospital in Bydgoszcz, Poland — five randomised, double-blind experiments, the largest with n = 84, with the sham condition validated by direct voltage measurement. The authors declared no competing financial interests. They found consistent shifts in serum iron, ionised calcium, phosphorus and thyroid hormones. PubMed 21469913

And there is a growing body of smaller work: reduced blood viscosity, improved heart rate variability, faster wound closure, improved mood. These are early and mostly small, and we treat them as promising rather than proven — but they point consistently in the same direction, and that consistency is worth something.

What people in the studies reported

These are outcomes reported by participants in published trials — not customer testimonials.

In the Salzburg trial, grounded sleepers avoided the haemoconcentration seen in the sham group, and reported the recovery difference alongside the blood work. In the 2019 study of massage therapists — double-blind, six weeks, alternating grounded and ungrounded periods — participants reported significant increases in physical function and energy and significant decreases in fatigue, low mood, tiredness and pain, with benefits still present a month later. In Ghaly & Teplitz's original 2004 work, participants described falling asleep faster and waking less. In Chevalier's 2015 mood study, pleasant and positive mood improved significantly in grounded participants and not in sham-grounded ones.

Every one of these is self-reported. That is worth less than a blood marker — but it is also the thing you will personally notice, and it is what the research consistently finds when it asks.

How to judge a grounding claim — including ours

Here is the part that makes everything above trustworthy.

Check who funded it. Clint Ober, a former cable television executive, invented the grounding sleep mat, founded EarthFX Inc., and funded the foundational research himself when universities turned him down. The three most-published authors in this field disclose, in their own papers: "independent contractors for Earth FX, Inc., the company sponsoring earthing research, and own a small percentage of shares in the company." This is disclosed, not hidden, and industry-funded research isn't automatically wrong — pharmaceutical companies fund drug trials. But it means the studies that carry the most weight are the independent ones, which is exactly why we led this page with Salzburg and Bydgoszcz rather than the more dramatic industry results.

Check the sample size and the control group. Some widely quoted grounding results come from studies of ten or twelve people with no control group at all. We are happy to cite them as suggestive. We will not cite them as proof, and neither should anyone else.

Check whether the result held up when repeated. A 2010 pilot with eight people reported dramatic pain relief. The same authors repeated it properly in 2015 with 32 men and sham controls — and on pain specifically, found no significant difference between grounded and sham. The muscle-damage findings did hold up. We tell you this because it is true, and because a company that only shows you the wins is showing you a sales pitch, not evidence.

Be suspicious of the number 70. The "70-fold voltage reduction" quoted across this industry traces to a 2005 paper with a sample size of one — the author, measuring himself, in a journal that isn't PubMed-indexed. The physics is right; the citation isn't what it's presented as. We use Brown's n = 50 figure instead.

What we promise

That your sheet conducts, that you can prove it yourself in thirty seconds, and that it keeps conducting — because we give you the instrument to check. No other grounding company puts a tester in the box, and the reason is simple: a tester lets you catch them when the product stops working.

What we will say is this. The electrical effect is real and measurable. The best independent trial found grounded sleepers had less than half the muscle damage. The sleep data is genuinely promising. And you can verify the one thing that has to be true — that the sheet conducts — on your own bed, on night one.
