Do grounding sheets work? What the research reports, in plain English
Grounding sheets sit in an odd spot. The electrical part is simple physics and easy to check. The health research is newer, and a handful of studies have reported encouraging results. This article walks through both, so you can decide for yourself.
Short version: a grounding sheet connects your bed to the earth through your outlet's ground port. Researchers have measured what that does to the body's electrical potential, and several studies have reported better sleep, less muscle damage after hard exercise, and less pain and stress among people who slept or worked grounded. Most of these studies are small, so we describe them as encouraging early findings, and we tell you who paid for each one.
How a grounding sheet works
A grounding sheet is cotton woven with conductive silver fibre. A cord clips to the sheet and plugs into the ground port of a properly wired outlet, the round third hole. That port is wired to the earth, and it carries no power to your bed. It is only a path.
Indoors, your body sits in the weak electric field that comes from house wiring, lamps and chargers, so it floats at a small voltage compared with the ground. Connect to earth and that voltage drops to almost nothing. This part is ordinary electrical engineering, the same idea that keeps static off electronics on a factory floor.
- Brown (2016), 50 participants: body AC voltage was reduced by an average of 58-fold when people were grounded.
- Chamberlin and colleagues (2014): five electrical engineers at the University of New Hampshire built their own instruments and independently measured charge exchange between a grounded person and the earth.
The good news is that you don't have to take anyone's word for this: the studies are linked on our research page. For how to set up and look after a sheet, see the Care and use guide.
Five things researchers have reported
1. Better sleep scores
In a 2025 randomised, double-blind trial, 60 adults were enrolled and 56 were analysed. One group slept on a grounded mat and the other on an identical mat that wasn't connected, for 31 nights. The grounded group improved significantly on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Insomnia Severity Index, and their activity trackers recorded more total sleep. Improvements in insomnia scores were still there at follow-up a week later. The mat maker helped fund the study, so independent repeats are the natural next step.
2. Less muscle damage after hard exercise
At the University of Salzburg in 2019, 22 people ran downhill until their legs were worn out, then slept grounded or on a sham, an identical sheet that wasn't connected, for ten days. Nobody involved knew which was which. Creatine kinase, a standard blood marker of muscle breakdown, rose 310% in the grounded group and 760% in the sham group. Jump height fell 8.2% in the grounded group and 14.3% in the sham group. The authors declared no commercial ties to a grounding company.
3. Less pain, fatigue and low mood in working adults
A 2019 double-blind study of massage therapists (Chevalier and colleagues, in Explore) ran for six weeks, alternating grounded and ungrounded periods. During grounded periods, participants reported significantly lower pain, fatigue, tiredness and low mood, and significantly higher energy and physical function. The benefits were still present a month later.
4. A more typical daily cortisol pattern
An early pilot by Ghaly and Teplitz (2004) followed 12 people who slept grounded for eight weeks. The researchers reported a more typical day-and-night cortisol pattern, and most people said they slept better and felt less pain and stress. This is often quoted as the study that started the conversation. It was small and had no control group, so it points the way rather than settling the question.
5. Better mood
In a 2015 study by Chevalier, pleasant and positive mood improved significantly in grounded participants, and not in those who were sham-grounded.
At a glance
| Study | People | Design | What was reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Park et al., 2025 | 60 enrolled, 56 analysed | Randomised, double-blind, sham mat, 31 nights | Better sleep-quality and insomnia scores; more total sleep on activity trackers |
| Müller et al., 2019 (Salzburg) | 22 | Triple-blind, sham-controlled, 10 days | Lower rise in muscle-damage marker; smaller drop in jump height |
| Chevalier et al., 2019 | Massage therapists | Double-blind, alternating periods, 6 weeks | Less pain, fatigue and low mood; more energy and function |
| Ghaly & Teplitz, 2004 | 12 | Pilot, no control group, 8 weeks | More typical cortisol rhythm; better sleep, less pain and stress reported |
Where the research stands
Researchers describe grounding as an emerging area. A 2015 review of the field (Oschman, Chevalier and Brown, Journal of Inflammation Research) brings together the early findings on sleep, cortisol, pain, stress and inflammation, and its authors say the pilot results need confirming in larger studies. Two of its authors disclose ties to a grounding company, so we read it alongside the independent trials above.
What we'd say honestly is this: the studies that use a sham control and blinding are the most convincing, and they are the ones we lead with. Several results are self-reported, which means they reflect how people felt, and that is also what you will notice yourself. The next step for the field is larger trials run by teams with no commercial link.
Why sleep is the natural place to ground
You spend hours in bed, lying still, in direct contact with your bedding. A grounding sheet turns that time into contact time without asking you to change your routine: no app, no charging, nothing to remember once it's set up.
What to expect
People differ. Some notice a change within the first few nights. Others take a few weeks, so we suggest sleeping grounded every night for a good stretch before you decide. That is why our money-back guarantee runs for 90 nights instead of 30. Here is the week-by-week guide.
How to choose a grounding sheet that stays conductive
- Woven, not sprayed. Silver fibre woven through the cotton stays put in the wash. A surface coating can wear off.
- Look after it. Silver fibre degrades with washing, oils and residue, and you can't see that by looking, so follow the maker's care instructions.
- Use a grounded outlet. The sheet only helps if the outlet's ground is wired correctly. If you're unsure about an outlet, try another one, or ask a licensed electrician to check and correct its ground.
- Skip the fabric softener. It can coat the fibre. Cold water, gentle cycle, no bleach.

Quick answers
Is it safe? The cord connects to your outlet's ground port only. It is a path to earth, not a power source. Plug the cord into an outlet with a working ground. If you're unsure about an outlet, try another one, or ask a licensed electrician to check and correct its ground. If you have an implanted medical device or a health condition, check with your doctor first. More on safety.
